As expected the sequel of Kung Fu Panda 2 offers me a lot of fun filled, fast-paced action animation that I watched the movie twice last night and earlier today. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are heart-warming lessons to inspire both children, adults, and seminarians alike too.
At the start of Kung Fu Panda 2, Po was living his dream of fighting alongside the famous Furious Five, legendary kung fu masters. As the The Dragon Warrior, Po was protecting the Valley of Peace daily against the bad guys. But Po’s new life of awesomeness was threatened by the emergence of a new formidable villain, who planned to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu forever. Po must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then would he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed. Ultimately, Po had to deal with his self-identity, and the person who he’d choose to be.
Beside the quotes of inner peace uttered several times, here’s the quote I really liked in the movie. At the depth of Po’s self-identity crisis, the Soothsayer gave him this inspiring advice to reflect upon: “Your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn’t make you who you are, it is the rest of your story, who you choose to be… …So who are you, Panda?” Soothsayer. It’s not just how Po chooses to view the circumstances or people around him, but he had to choose how he sees himself, who he chooses to be, that defined his personal power and ultimate destiny. It’s at the level of his self-identity that had to be resolved, and then every awesomeness would flow from there. In the case of seminarians, some would admit how miserable their family were, but that wouldn’t be the whole story. What matters most is what they choose to be. Gratia supponit naturam, grace complements the nature.
